Why Hero Shooters Punish Latency Differently

In a tactical shooter like Valorant, most of what latency costs you is a single hitscan click. The server rewinds time to reconstruct what you saw, and a well-tuned lag compensation system hides a surprising amount of delay. Hero shooters break that model in three ways.

Most of the damage is not hitscan. Marvel Rivals leans heavily on projectiles, arcs, and area effects. Lag compensation works cleanly for an instant hitscan trace, but a travel-time projectile has to be simulated forward on the server against a target whose position is also being predicted. Eight Fixes, In Order of Impact

  1. Connect by Ethernet. One cable removes an entire category of timing variance. For an ability-timing game, consistency is worth more than a few milliseconds of average.
  2. Set your region manually and verify it. Do not assume the auto-selected region is optimal. Compare regions in a browser test, then set the game to match.

  4. Pause all background transfers before queueing. Launcher updates, cloud backups, and other devices downloading are the usual suspects.
