Hero-shooter netcode has more to resolve than gunplay

A pure hitscan shooter mostly needs the server to answer one question: where was everyone when that shot was fired? Marvel Rivals has to answer that while also arbitrating shields going up, heals landing, knockbacks displacing bodies, portals opening, Team-Up abilities activating, and chunks of the map ceasing to exist. NetEase has not published a tick rate for the game, so the honest advice is to judge it by feel rather than by a number — but the more simultaneous state a server reconciles, the more your own network delay compounds with everything else in the queue.

That shows up most clearly in ability timing. When Doctor Strange throws up a shield, Magneto bubbles an ally, or Luna Snow fires an ultimate into an incoming dive, the value of that input is measured in tenths of a second. On a high-latency connection your input reaches the server after the damage has already been resolved, and the ability visibly comes out too late from your teammates' perspective even though it looked on time on your screen. Nothing about your reaction speed changed; the server simply heard you later.

Why dives and flanks punish latency differently

Dive characters live and die on the first half-second of an engagement. A Spider-Man swing, a Venom leap, or an Iron Fist chase closes distance faster than most players can turn, which means both sides are relying on very fresh positional data. On high ping the diver arrives on your screen late and already mid-combo, and as the diver your own escape resolves late too — you press the disengage, and the server kills you during the window before it registers. Latency taxes the aggressor and the target in different ways during the same fight.

Projectile heroes feel it differently again. Hitscan damage from Hela or the Punisher is settled the instant the server accepts your shot, so latency mainly costs you information. Hawkeye's arrows, Namor's projectiles, and lobbed abilities travel through the world, which means you are leading a target whose position you saw a round trip ago and then waiting for travel time on top. That double delay is why projectile characters feel noticeably harder above roughly 70 ms even when your aim has not changed at all.

Picking a NetEase region and reading chaotic team fights

Marvel Rivals lets you select your server region rather than forcing you onto one, and that choice sets the ceiling on how good your connection can be for the whole session. Test first, then pick: if two regions land within about 15 ms of each other, prefer the one with the healthier queue at your play time. Regional gaps can be large — if you play from Brazil or Oceania, compare São Paulo against Virginia and Sydney against Singapore, because the difference between a local region and a distant one is usually decisive.

Once you are in, separate ping from server-side frame drops. A ten-ability team fight with terrain collapsing can hitch for everyone in the lobby at the same instant, which is the server struggling with the moment rather than your route failing. Your own latency problem looks different: only you rubber-band, only your abilities land late, and the jitter figure in this test is high for the region you selected. Aim for competitive play under 50 ms, and treat quick play as the place where 80 ms is still perfectly enjoyable.

How we measure this

Browsers can't send the ICMP or UDP packets games use, so this tool measures the warm HTTPS round-trip time from your device to the cloud region closest to each of Marvel Rivals's server locations — a reliable proxy for the latency you'll experience, not a direct ping to Marvel Rivals's game servers. We warm up each connection first so TCP/TLS handshakes aren't counted, then keep the best of several samples. Absolute values can read slightly higher than in-game ping; the ranking of regions from fastest to slowest is what you should rely on.

Is this the ping Marvel Rivals will show me in game?

Not literally, and we will not pretend otherwise. Browsers cannot send the game's own network traffic, so this test measures warm HTTPS round-trip time to the cloud region closest to each Marvel Rivals hosting geography. It is a reliable stand-in for the latency you will experience, not a direct ping to NetEase's servers. Expect the in-game figure to differ by a few milliseconds, while the ranking of regions from fastest to slowest holds up.

What ping do I need for competitive Marvel Rivals?

Under 50 ms is the practical target for ranked, and under 30 ms is where shield and heal timing stops being a limiting factor at all. Quick play remains genuinely fun up to about 80 ms. Above 100 ms, dive characters will reach you before your screen shows them moving, which is the point where switching regions helps more than any settings change.

Which server region should I choose?

Whichever one this test ranks fastest for you, with queue health as the tiebreaker. If two regions are within roughly 15 ms, take the busier one at your usual play time — a marginally higher ping in a full lobby beats a five-minute queue and a lopsided match. Re-test if you move, change ISP, or start playing at very different hours.

My ping is fine but team fights still stutter. Why?

Check whether everyone hitches at once. Big fights with several ultimates and destructible terrain resolving together can stress the server itself, and that affects the whole lobby regardless of individual latency. If the stutter is yours alone, look at the jitter figure for your region in this test and at packet loss — an unstable 40 ms plays worse in Rivals than a steady 70 ms.
