Fortnite Ping Test

Here's a fun fact that makes this page more useful than most ping tests: Fortnite's game servers run largely on Amazon Web Services — the exact cloud regions this tool measures. So while we're still measuring HTTPS round-trip time rather than game traffic, for Fortnite the network path we test is essentially the path your match traffic takes. If you care about winning build fights, this is the closest a browser can get to your real number.

Lower = better. The number is the real HTTPS round-trip from your browser to that region; your in-game ping will read a bit lower.

What counts as good ping in Fortnite?

PingVerdictWhat it feels like
Under 30 msBuild-fight readyYou'll win wall-take races and your edits feel instant. The band serious builders should target.
30–55 msSolidGreat for pubs and ranked. You'll lose the occasional 50/50 wall against very low-ping opponents.
55–90 msZero Build friendlyGunfights stay fair, but piece control against sweats becomes an uphill battle. Zero Build hides most of it.
Over 90 msSwitch regionsWalls get stolen and edits confirm late. Change matchmaking region or fix your local network first.

Why this test maps unusually well to Fortnite

Epic hosts Fortnite matches predominantly on AWS infrastructure spread across the same regions listed below — Virginia and Oregon for NA-East and NA-West, Frankfurt and Ireland for Europe, Tokyo for Asia, Sydney for Oceania, São Paulo for Brazil, and the UAE for the Middle East. When you test here, your packets traverse the same internet route they would during a match. Expect the in-game meter to sit close to these numbers, usually within 10–20 ms.

Ping and the building meta

No mainstream game punishes latency in quite the way Fortnite's building does. Wall replacement is a server-authoritative race: when you and an opponent both grab the same wall slot, whoever's request reaches the server first owns the piece. At 20 ms you win those races against a 60 ms opponent almost every time; the reverse is equally true. High-level players talk about 'taking walls' as a ping-gated skill for good reason.

Fortnite's servers tick at around 30 updates per second, which adds a small fixed delay on top of your network time. That's why competitive players obsess over shaving 15–20 ms with region choice — it's one of the few lag sources you actually control.

Matchmaking regions and how to switch

Fortnite lets you pick your matchmaking region directly: Settings → Game → Matchmaking Region, complete with an in-game ping readout per region. Use our test to pre-check which regions are viable from your location, then confirm in the lobby. Players between two regions (say, central US or eastern Europe) often find both are playable — pick the lower-jitter one for consistency rather than chasing 5 ms.

How we measure this

Browsers can't send the ICMP or UDP packets games use, so this tool measures the warm HTTPS round-trip time from your device to the cloud region closest to each of Fortnite's server locations — a reliable proxy for the latency you'll experience, not a direct ping to Fortnite's game servers. We warm up each connection first so TCP/TLS handshakes aren't counted, then keep the best of several samples. Absolute values can read slightly higher than in-game ping; the ranking of regions from fastest to slowest is what you should rely on.

Fortnite ping FAQ

Why does my in-game Fortnite ping differ from this test?

Small differences are normal: we measure a warm HTTPS round trip to the AWS region, while Fortnite measures its own UDP game traffic, and match-time congestion adds variance. Because Fortnite genuinely runs on the AWS regions we test, the gap is usually small — this is one of the games where our proxy measurement is at its most accurate.

How do I change my Fortnite matchmaking region?

Open Settings, go to the Game tab, and find Matchmaking Region under the Region section. Each option shows a live ping estimate. Test here first to know what to expect, then pick the region that shows lowest both in our test and in the lobby readout.

Does high ping hurt building or aiming more?

Building, by far. Aim in Fortnite benefits from lag compensation, so your shots mostly land where you point even at 70 ms. Wall-taking and edit confirmation have no such forgiveness — they're first-come-first-served races at the server. That's why Zero Build feels dramatically more playable on a mediocre connection.

Is 0 ping possible in Fortnite?

Not literally — even light in fiber takes time. But players who live near an AWS region (northern Virginia, Frankfurt, Tokyo) genuinely play in the low single digits, which the in-game meter can round down to 0. If our test shows a region under 10 ms for you, congratulations: you have the connection every pro moves cities for.
