Is 40 ms Ping Good?
Good
40 ms is good. It is fine for every mainstream genre, though it is the point where the most latency-sensitive players start to prefer a closer server if one is available.
Not sure this is really your ping? Measure it yourself — the test runs in your browser and takes a few seconds.
Run a ping testWhat 40 ms actually feels like
Still responsive. At 40 ms the round trip is a little under three frames at 60 fps. Casual play feels normal; in a close peek duel against someone at 10 ms, the difference exists but is smaller than most players assume.
40 ms by game type
| Genre | At 40 ms | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive FPS | Fine | Perfectly playable; a closer server helps if one exists. |
| MOBA | Great | No practical impact on skill shots or trading. |
| Fighting games | Noticeable | Around two to three frames — experienced players will feel it. |
| MMO / Turn-based | Great | Completely irrelevant at this level. |
What produces a 40 ms ping
Usually genuine distance — a server roughly 1,000-2,000 km away, or a nearby one reached through an indirect route. Wi-Fi, a congested line, or an ISP that hands traffic off at a distant exchange can each add 10-20 ms on top of a lower baseline.
Can you improve it?
Often 10-15 ms, and worth attempting at this level. Check whether the game offers a closer region, move to Ethernet, and confirm no other device is saturating your upload. If ping jumps to 100 ms or more whenever someone streams video, your router is the bottleneck, not your ISP.
Questions about 40 ms ping
Is 40 ms ping good enough for ranked shooters?
Yes. Ranked matchmaking regularly mixes players from 10 ms to 80 ms. At 40 ms you are in the normal range and your hit registration will behave as designed.
Why did my ping jump from 20 ms to 40 ms?
Most often a server region change, a routing change by your ISP, or new congestion on your own line. Run the test again while nothing else is downloading — if it returns to 20 ms, the cause was local.
