Why pallets and vaults look different on each screen

During a chase, the killer and survivor each send a slightly delayed version of events to the server. The server must decide whether a weapon connected before a pallet stun or whether a survivor cleared a window before the hit arrived. With low, stable latency those timelines are close enough that the result feels natural. With a slow or jittery route, one player can see the pallet land while the server has already accepted the killer's swing, producing the familiar hit followed by a stun.

The same timing mismatch explains many reports of hits through pallets, attacks that seem to reach around corners, and "invisible grabs" during an interaction. They can look impossible from the losing player's camera, but they are usually latency and server reconciliation artifacts rather than proof of cheating. Because the server distributes its ruling back to everyone, one unstable connection can create confusing animation corrections for the other four players too, even when their own ping is excellent.

Dedicated servers, regional matchmaking, and late-night queues

Dead by Daylight runs matches on dedicated servers, and matchmaking normally assigns a lobby to regional infrastructure near the players it has assembled. You do not choose Frankfurt, Virginia, or Tokyo from an in-game server browser; the system balances location with skill, role availability, party composition, and queue time. Testing the listed regions therefore does not force a destination, but it reveals the geographic routes most likely to feel responsive when the available player pool is healthy.

At off-peak hours, that local pool becomes thinner, especially when too many players are queueing for one role. Matchmaking may widen its search and assemble people across a larger area rather than leave them waiting indefinitely. The resulting server can be reasonable for the majority but distant for one participant. That player's late updates still have to be reconciled with the same shared match, so chases and interactions can look rough for all five even though only one connection crossed a region boundary.

What high ping costs killers and survivors

For a killer, latency is most visible at the end of a chase. A lunge that appears to catch a survivor at the window may reach the server after the vault has been accepted, while an unstable connection can make the survivor's path update in small jumps and spoil careful spacing around a loop. High ping does not simply extend weapon range or guarantee favorable validation; it makes hit confirmation less predictable and can turn a well-timed attack into either a surprising miss or an ugly-looking connection.

For a survivor, the expensive moment is committing to a defensive action before the killer's accepted hit. Dropping a pallet or starting a fast vault on reaction leaves little margin once the round trip is long, so the input may arrive after the server has resolved the swing. The practical adjustment is to act earlier, but that gives the killer more opportunity to bait the pallet or change direction. Stable ping preserves the intended mind game; high ping replaces part of that mind game with network guesswork.

How we measure this

Browsers can't send the ICMP or UDP packets games use, so this tool measures the warm HTTPS round-trip time from your device to the cloud region closest to each of Dead by Daylight's server locations — a reliable proxy for the latency you'll experience, not a direct ping to Dead by Daylight's game servers. We warm up each connection first so TCP/TLS handshakes aren't counted, then keep the best of several samples. Absolute values can read slightly higher than in-game ping; the ranking of regions from fastest to slowest is what you should rely on.

Is this the same ping I'll see in Dead by Daylight?

Not exactly. A browser cannot send ICMP probes or Dead by Daylight's game traffic to its dedicated servers, so this test measures warm HTTPS round-trip time to the cloud region closest to each likely server location. That makes it a reliable proxy for comparing regions, not a direct reading from your match. The absolute number can differ because the game's routing, the selected host location, and live network conditions are not identical.

Why did a killer hit me after I dropped the pallet?

Your client can show the pallet animation before the server has received and accepted that input. If the killer's swing reaches the server first, the hit can stand and the stun can follow. Jitter makes the sequence look worse because updates arrive unevenly. It is frustrating, but the visual contradiction by itself does not show that the killer was cheating.

Can I manually choose a Dead by Daylight server region?

There is no normal in-game data-center selector. Matchmaking chooses infrastructure after assembling players, prioritizing a workable combination of latency and queue conditions. Your best control is indirect: use a stable connection, avoid a distant VPN exit, queue with nearby friends, and compare these regional results to spot ISP routing problems before you play.

Does one high-ping player make the whole lobby lag?

They do not necessarily raise everyone else's measured ping, because each player has a separate route to the dedicated server. However, the server must reconcile that player's delayed movement and interactions and send the result to everyone. The other four can therefore see corrections, odd hit feedback, or awkward grabs caused by one connection even while their own network graphs look healthy.
