Is 100 ms Ping Good?
Poor for fast games
100 ms is not good. It is the threshold most guides use to mark where fast-paced games stop feeling right, though slower genres still play perfectly well at this latency.
Not sure this is really your ping? Measure it yourself — the test runs in your browser and takes a few seconds.
Run a ping testWhat 100 ms actually feels like
Delayed. At 100 ms the round trip is about six frames at 60 fps — enough that you can feel the gap between pressing a key and seeing the result. Dying after reaching cover becomes routine rather than occasional.
100 ms by game type
| Genre | At 100 ms | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Competitive FPS | Rough | You will consistently lose exchanges you should win. |
| MOBA | Noticeable | Playable, but skill shots require deliberate leading. |
| Fighting games | Rough | Around six frames — precise play is no longer viable. |
| MMO / Turn-based | Fine | Still fine; these genres tolerate this comfortably. |
What produces a 100 ms ping
Long-distance routing in most cases: an intercontinental server, or a regional one reached the long way around. It also shows up on badly congested lines, on some mobile networks, and on connections with an overloaded upstream during peak hours.
Can you improve it?
Potentially large, and worth investigating properly. First check whether the game is placing you in a distant region — that alone can account for most of the 100 ms. Then test again with nothing else using the connection; if the number drops sharply, congestion rather than distance is the cause and a router with smart queue management will help.
Questions about 100 ms ping
Is 100 ms ping playable?
Yes for MMOs, strategy games and most co-op play. For competitive shooters and fighting games it is a genuine handicap, and worth fixing before blaming your aim or your hardware.
What is a normal ping to a server on another continent?
Roughly 80-150 ms is normal intercontinental latency. Europe to the US East Coast is about 80-100 ms, Europe to the US West Coast around 140-160 ms. If your ping matches that, your connection is working correctly — the distance is the problem.
