Frankfurt is the centre of gravity for European internet traffic. DE-CIX, the world's busiest internet exchange, sits there, and so do the European data centres for a long list of games and services. If a title offers a generic "EU" or "Europe West" server, there is a strong chance your packets end up in Frankfurt. This test measures your browser's round-trip time to that region.

Why Frankfurt is the benchmark for European latency
Europe is unusually well connected: short distances, dense fibre, and a handful of enormous exchanges that almost every carrier peers at. Frankfurt is the largest of them, which means a route to Frankfurt is usually the shortest, most direct international path available to a European ISP. That makes it a good yardstick — if your Frankfurt number looks bad relative to the table below, the fault is almost certainly local rather than a matter of geography.
It also makes Frankfurt the fairest single comparison point for players spread across the continent. A Portuguese player and a Polish player will never get identical ping to each other, but both can measure themselves against Frankfurt and know whether their connection is behaving normally for their distance.
Reading your result against the rest of Europe
Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Switzerland all sit inside a very tight band, because they are physically close and peer at the same exchanges. The UK, France and Poland add a small, predictable amount. Southern and eastern Europe climb further, and Turkey in particular tends to run higher than raw distance suggests because international transit out of the country is comparatively concentrated.
If you are in one of the close-in countries and seeing double the expected number, work through the usual suspects before anything else: wireless instead of wired, a VPN you forgot was running, background uploads, or an old router doing NAT badly. How this measurement works
A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, or the UDP packets games use. Instead we open a connection to a real endpoint inside the Frankfurt data-centre region, warm it up so the TCP and TLS handshakes are not counted, then keep the best of several samples. The result is a genuine network round trip to Frankfurt — usually a little higher than a raw ICMP ping, and a close, consistent proxy for the latency a game server in the same city would give you.

Do all EU game servers run in Frankfurt?
Not all, but many. Riot spreads Valorant across Frankfurt, Paris, London, Stockholm and Warsaw; Valve's EU CS2 and Dota 2 pools include Frankfurt; and a large share of publisher backends sit there because of DE-CIX. Amsterdam, Paris and London are the other common choices, and they are usually within a few milliseconds of Frankfurt for most of Europe.
My Frankfurt ping is fine but my game ping is not. Why?
The most common cause is that the game is not actually connecting to Frankfurt. Check the server region in the game's settings — matchmaking will sometimes place you on a distant data centre to fill a lobby faster, especially outside peak hours. The second most common cause is packet loss, which leaves the latency number looking healthy while the game still stutters.
Does a VPN help my ping to Frankfurt?
Almost never if you are already in western Europe — you are adding a hop to a route that is already close to optimal. A VPN can help in the specific case where your ISP takes a genuinely bad path, which you can detect by comparing your Frankfurt result against Ireland and Stockholm: if one is wildly out of line with the others, the route is the problem, not the distance.
