The Mediterranean gateway

Cables from Egypt, Israel, Turkey and North Africa surface on the Italian and southern French coasts before running north, which makes Milan a natural aggregation point. For players around the Mediterranean rim it is frequently the closest real European hosting location, and often a much better choice than the default Frankfurt pool.

That matters most for Turkey, Greece, Israel and North Africa, where the difference between Milan and Frankfurt can be 20 to 40 ms — enough to change how a competitive game feels. It is a comparison a lot of players in those countries have never actually run.

Italy's own connection quality

Italy's access network is uneven. Full fibre coverage in the northern cities is good and produces numbers on par with anywhere in Europe, while much of the south and the smaller towns still run on copper-tail connections that add both delay and jitter. A Milan-area fibre user and a rural copper user in the same country can be 40 ms apart.

If your figure looks poor, establish which category you are in before troubleshooting further. On a copper tail, no router setting or server choice will close the gap — but bufferbloat control will at least stop it collapsing further whenever something uploads in the background.

How this measurement works

A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, or the UDP packets games use. Instead we open a connection to a real endpoint inside the Milan data-centre region, warm it up so the TCP and TLS handshakes are not counted, then keep the best of several samples. The result is a genuine network round trip to Milan — usually a little higher than a raw ICMP ping, and a close, consistent proxy for the latency a game server in the same city would give you.

Very often yes, and by a meaningful margin. Traffic from the eastern Mediterranean surfaces in Italy before running north to Germany, so choosing Milan skips a leg. Run the test and compare the two rows — a 20 to 40 ms gap is common.

Which games use a Milan server?

Riot includes Milan in Valorant's European data-centre set, and various publishers host southern European services there. Many games still route the whole continent to Frankfurt or Amsterdam, in which case your Frankfurt figure is the one that matters — which is why both are in the comparison list.

Why is my Italian ping high on a fast connection?

Most likely a copper tail. Fibre-to-the-cabinet connections run the last stretch over copper, which adds delay and jitter that bandwidth figures do not reveal. A 200 Mbps FTTC line can easily show worse latency than a 100 Mbps full-fibre one.
