What Is Ping in a Speed Test?
It is the round-trip time between your device and the test server, in milliseconds — measured while your connection is idle, against the closest server the tool could find. That last part is why the number is usually flattering.
The three numbers, side by side

- Responsiveness. How long one small message takes to reach a server and come back. Determines whether a game, a call or a remote desktop feels immediate.

- Consistency. How much the ping varies between samples. Often the number that explains a connection that "tests fine" but behaves badly.
Why bandwidth and ping have nothing to do with each other
The usual analogy is a road. Bandwidth is how many lanes it has; latency is how long the road is. Adding lanes lets more cars travel at once, but it does not shorten the distance. This is why a gigabit connection routed through a distant exchange can feel less responsive than a modest connection with a short, clean route — and why upgrading your plan almost never improves your ping.
It also explains a result people find confusing: 900 Mbps download alongside a 90 ms ping. Nothing is broken. The line has plenty of capacity and simply sits a long way, in network terms, from whatever it was measured against.
Why the speed test number flatters you
Speed tests are designed to measure your line, not the internet. To do that fairly they pick the nearest, least congested server available — often one hosted inside your own ISP's network. The result is the best case your connection can produce, which is genuinely useful for spotting a fault, and genuinely misleading if you read it as "my ping in games."
A player in Berlin might see 8 ms in a speed test, 25 ms to a European game server and 110 ms to one on the American east coast. All three are correct. They are simply three different distances, and only the last two describe what happens when you actually play.
Use the speed test figure as a health check on your own line, and a regional test to understand what the rest of the world will feel like.
Idle ping versus loaded ping — the number that actually predicts lag
Most speed tests now report latency twice: once while the connection is doing nothing, and once during the download and upload phases. Those second figures are labelled loaded latency, latency under load, or in some tools a letter grade for "responsiveness."
The gap between them is the single most diagnostic thing on the results page. It reveals bufferbloat: routers and modems ship with oversized transmit queues, and when a large transfer fills that queue, every small packet behind it waits its turn. Your game's position update sits behind several seconds of buffered video data and arrives far too late.
A connection reading 14 ms idle and 22 ms loaded is well behaved. One reading 14 ms idle and 350 ms loaded has a queue management problem, and it is the reason the game only stutters when someone else in the house starts a download. The fix is not more bandwidth — it is enabling Smart Queue Management, SQM, fq_codel or your router's equivalent, which caps the queue instead of letting it grow.

What to do with the number
If your idle ping is low and your loaded ping is close to it, your connection is healthy and any lag you experience in a specific game is about the route to that game's servers rather than your line.
If your idle ping is high against a nearby server, work outwards: test on a cable to rule out Wi-Fi, then ping your own router to see how much of the delay is inside your home, then run a traceroute to see where along the path the number jumps.
And if the idle figure looks fine but the loaded figure is many times worse, stop looking at your speed and start looking at your router's queue settings. That single change fixes more real-world lag than any bandwidth upgrade.

Is 20 ms ping good on a speed test?
Yes, but remember what it is measuring. 20 ms to a server in your own city is a healthy result and means your local connection and first few hops are in good shape. It does not promise 20 ms to a game server three countries away — that route is longer and will always read higher.
Why is my speed test ping lower than my game ping?
Because they are measuring different destinations. Speed tests deliberately pick the nearest, best-connected server to show your line at its best. Your game connects to whichever data centre the matchmaker chose, which may be far away and reached over a busier route. A gap of two or three times between the two figures is completely normal.
What is loaded latency or 'ping under load'?
It is your latency measured while the connection is actually busy, rather than while it is idle. Most speed tests now report both. The idle figure flatters almost every connection; the loaded figure exposes bufferbloat, where an oversized queue in your router or modem holds packets during a transfer. A line that reads 15 ms idle and 300 ms loaded will feel unplayable whenever anyone else in the house is downloading.
Does higher download speed lower ping?
Not directly. Bandwidth and latency are independent measurements. Upgrading from 100 Mbps to 1 Gbps does not shorten the physical route or reduce the number of hops. It can help indirectly, because a fatter pipe is harder to saturate and a saturated pipe is what causes latency spikes — but the idle ping figure will barely move.
Why does the ping number change every time I test?
The tool may pick a different server, the route may shift, and background traffic on your network varies. Variation of a few milliseconds is normal. Variation of tens of milliseconds between consecutive tests points to an unstable link, most often Wi-Fi, and that instability matters more than the average value.
