Ping Test to United States (Oregon)
The Pacific Northwest has become the west coast's hosting centre — cheap hydro power, cool weather and short cable runs down to the California exchanges made it the obvious place to build. Most "NA West" game pools and a lot of trans-Pacific traffic pass through here. This test measures the round-trip time from your browser to that region.

What US West is really for
US West exists because the country is too wide for one server pool. It serves everyone from Vancouver to San Diego, and it doubles as the American end of the trans-Pacific cable system, which is why Japanese, Korean and Australian players often find it their best North American option by a wide margin.
For a player in California or Washington, this is the region that should give you your lowest North American figure by some distance. If it does not — if Virginia comes back similar or better — your ISP is doing something strange with its routing, and that is worth raising with them because it will affect every west-coast service you use, not just games.
Trans-Pacific players and the reverse trip
A significant share of the people who run this test are not in America at all. They want to know whether a US West server is playable from Tokyo, Seoul, Manila or Sydney, usually because a game they care about has no local shard or a dead one. The trans-Pacific cables are excellent, so the numbers are better than raw distance suggests, but they are still triple-digit.
The honest guidance is genre-dependent. An MMO, a card game or a co-op shooter at 130 ms is fine. A tactical shooter at 130 ms means you lose most even duels against a local player. Measure, then decide against the specific game rather than against a generic "good ping" number.
How this measurement works
A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, or the UDP packets games use. Instead we open a connection to a real endpoint inside the Oregon data-centre region, warm it up so the TCP and TLS handshakes are not counted, then keep the best of several samples. The result is a genuine network round trip to Oregon — usually a little higher than a raw ICMP ping, and a close, consistent proxy for the latency a game server in the same city would give you.

Why do Asian players sometimes get better ping to Oregon than to Singapore?
Because cable topology beats distance. The trans-Pacific routes from Japan and Korea to the US west coast are short, direct and extremely well provisioned, while routing from northeast Asia down to Singapore can involve extra hops. It is unusual but it does happen, which is exactly why measuring is better than assuming.
Is US West better than US East for me?
Run the test and read the two rows. Roughly speaking, everything west of the Rockies should prefer US West and everything east of the Mississippi should prefer US East, with the middle of the country genuinely able to go either way depending on the ISP.
Does this test work over a mobile hotspot?
Yes, but interpret it carefully. Mobile networks add latency and, more importantly, jitter at the radio layer, so a single run tells you less than it does on fibre. Run it three or four times and look at the spread rather than the best number.
