Ping Test to Japan (Tokyo)

Tokyo is where Japan's hosting, its cable landings and its game infrastructure all converge. Final Fantasy XIV's Japanese data centres, Valorant's Tokyo servers, Apex Legends' JP pool and a long list of publisher backends operate from the metro area. This test measures the round-trip time from your browser to the Tokyo region so you can see whether a Japanese server is genuinely playable from where you are.

Why Tokyo behaves differently from other Asian hubs

Japan has excellent domestic infrastructure and a large local audience, so it hosts for itself rather than acting as a regional transit hub the way Singapore does. Traffic from Southeast Asia does not naturally flow through Tokyo, which is why the gap between a Singapore result and a Tokyo result can be much larger than the map suggests. Conversely, players in Korea and Taiwan often find Tokyo excellent.

The trans-Pacific side is where it gets interesting for foreign players. Tokyo sits on some of the best-provisioned subsea routes in the world to the US west coast, so a player in California often gets better ping to Tokyo than a player in Jakarta does — despite being several times further away. Distance sets the floor, but cable topology decides the real number.

Playing on JP servers from abroad

A lot of people run this test because they want to play on a Japanese server from outside Japan — usually for FFXIV, a fighting game, or an import title with no local shard. The practical threshold matters here: turn-based and MMO content is perfectly comfortable well above 100 ms, whereas anything with frame-perfect inputs stops being fun long before that.

If your result is high and you are considering a VPN or a "ping booster", measure first and decide after. Compare your Tokyo figure with Seoul and Oregon in the list below. If Seoul is dramatically better than Tokyo despite being further from you, your ISP is taking a poor route and a different path could genuinely help. If all three are proportional to distance, no tunnel is going to beat physics.

How this measurement works

A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, or the UDP packets games use. Instead we open a connection to a real endpoint inside the Tokyo data-centre region, warm it up so the TCP and TLS handshakes are not counted, then keep the best of several samples. The result is a genuine network round trip to Tokyo — usually a little higher than a raw ICMP ping, and a close, consistent proxy for the latency a game server in the same city would give you.

What ping do I need for FFXIV on a Japanese data centre?

FFXIV is forgiving by design. Most content, including savage raiding, is comfortable up to roughly 150 ms because the combat system uses a generous input queue. Where it hurts is precise weaving of off-global-cooldown abilities, which gets noticeably harder past about 120 ms.

Why is my Tokyo ping worse than my Singapore ping if I live in Asia?

Because Southeast Asian traffic aggregates in Singapore, not Tokyo. From Jakarta or Manila, packets to Japan often go via Singapore or Hong Kong first, so you pay the distance twice. That is normal and it is not something you can fix from your end.

Can a VPN lower my ping to Japan?

Only if your current route is genuinely bad. A VPN adds an extra leg, so it wins only when it replaces a worse detour with a better one. Compare your Tokyo, Seoul and Oregon results first — if they are all in proportion to distance, your route is already sane and a VPN will make things worse, not better.
