The island sits on top of the region's densest cable landing point, so Riot, Valve, Garena, Moonton and half the CDNs serving Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines terminate there rather than in the country you actually live in. Why your traffic ends up in Singapore even when you are not there

Singapore is where the SEA-ME-WE cable family, the Asia Pacific Gateway and the Southeast Asia–Japan cables all come ashore, and it hosts the Equinix SG1/SG2/SG3 exchange campus. That concentration means an ISP in Jakarta or Manila often finds it cheaper and faster to hand traffic to a peer in Singapore than to route it domestically. The practical consequence for gamers is that a "local" server frequently is not local at all.

It also explains a common complaint: two players in the same Indonesian city can see very different ping to the same match. If one ISP peers directly at an Singapore exchange and the other backhauls through Hong Kong or Tokyo first, the physical distance is identical but the route is not. Running this test on each connection is the fastest way to prove which of the two is taking the detour.

What good looks like from around the region

Malaysia and southern Indonesia should sit in the low tens of milliseconds — the distance is trivial and the peering is direct. Thailand and Vietnam usually land a little higher because more of the path runs overland. The Philippines is the outlier: physically close, but Philippine routing has historically been messy, and it is common to see values closer to what India gets despite being a third of the distance.

If your number is far above the range in the table below, the problem is almost never the Singapore end. Check whether you are on Wi-Fi, whether another device is saturating your uplink, and whether your ISP offers a "gaming" or direct-peering route. Compare the Singapore figure against Tokyo and Mumbai in the list underneath the test — if all three are equally bad, the bottleneck is on your side of the connection.

How this measurement works

A browser cannot send the ICMP packets the ping command uses, or the UDP packets games use. Instead we open a connection to a real endpoint inside the Singapore data-centre region, warm it up so the TCP and TLS handshakes are not counted, then keep the best of several samples. The result is a genuine network round trip to Singapore — usually a little higher than a raw ICMP ping, and a close, consistent proxy for the latency a game server in the same city would give you.
